Tsutsugaki is a method of free-hand resist dyeing practised for many centuries in Japan. A paste is applied to the cotton fabric with a ‘tsutsu’ before the fabric is repeatedly dipped in indigo to achieve a rich depth of colour. In some cases, additional colours are painted onto the resist areas. Each piece of this collection has been professionally cleaned, restored/conserved, backed with fabric and finally framed with indigo cotton. This textile is from Mr. Gensho Sasakura’s personal collection. Now in his eighties, these pieces were collected over a lifetime.
